Deep Dive Pros & Cons! Real Driving Review BYD Sealion 7 Premium - How Far Does It Really Go? Saggy Suspension?

เจาะลึกข้อดี-ข้อเสีย! รีวิวขับจริง BYD SEALION 7 Premium วิ่งจริงได้เท่านี้? ช่วงล่างย้วย?- [ที่สุด]

The Sealion 7 impressed me with its spacious interior, solid build quality, and comfortable ride, but the soft suspension and deep brake pedal feel hold it back from being the sporty SUV its exterior promises.

First Impressions

The moment I walked up to the Sealion 7, I understood why people do a double-take. That wide, low stance with the coupe roofline screams premium European SUV. The hidden door handles that pop out automatically are a nice theatrical touch, and BYD claims they're shaped like a sea lion's flipper, hence the name. Cute.

I spent over a week with this car as my daily driver, covering more than 600 km across highways, city traffic, and provincial roads. That's enough time to form some strong opinions, and I've got plenty.

Design and Exterior

The front end is genuinely striking with its supercar-inspired LED headlights and sequential turn signals. Cornering lights activate when you turn the wheel, which is a practical touch I appreciated during night driving. At 4.83 metres long and nearly 1.93 metres wide, this thing has serious road presence.

The rear is where opinions split. The coupe roofline sweeping down gives it a GLC Coupe vibe, and the teardrop LED tail lights spanning the full width look great at night. Personally, I think the rear doesn't quite match the drama of the front, but that's subjective.

Interior and Tech

Step inside and the soft-touch materials are everywhere. The centre console, door panels, dashboard, it's all padded and lined with fabric to prevent rattles. Storage is genuinely impressive with a deep centre console, cavernous door pockets, and a glovebox that's properly lined. The 500-litre boot expands to 1,769 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 15.6-inch rotating centre screen is a signature BYD party trick. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the head-up display stays visible even through polarised sunglasses, which is rare. However, the software interface feels a bit dated, like early Android. Some menus are buried absurdly deep. I spent ages finding the interior light auto-on setting. The screen is also too bright at night and doesn't remember your brightness adjustment, which gets annoying fast.

Driving Experience

Here's where the Sealion 7's personality gets interesting. The single motor pushes 331 horsepower and I clocked 0-100 km/h in about 6.45 seconds. That's more than enough. The throttle has a slight lag in the first half-second of application, even in Sport mode, before the power rushes in. It's not a dealbreaker but it's noticeable.

The steering is light and comfort-oriented. Even Sport mode only adds maybe 20-30% more weight. The turning circle is tighter than a Tesla Model Y, which is a win for urban driving. But the steering return action feels slow in the final degrees, so you need to guide it back manually during U-turns.

Now, the two things everyone asks about. First, the brakes. The pedal requires serious depth before you get meaningful stopping power. The first 30% barely does anything. If you're a late braker, you need to recalibrate your foot or you'll scare yourself. Second, the suspension. At city speeds it's lovely, absorbing bumps with a plush, floaty comfort that rear passengers will love. But push the speed up and hit a rough patch, and you get a bouncy, uncontrolled jiggle. Body roll during quick lane changes is significant even at 60 km/h. This car's exterior writes checks its chassis can't cash.

Energy Consumption and Charging

At 80 km/h I measured about 15.6 kWh per 100 km, which is reasonable. At 120 km/h it jumps to nearly 22 kWh per 100 km, and the usable range drops considerably. The 2,225 kg kerb weight doesn't help at highway speeds. DC fast charging peaked just above the rated 150 kW spec below 40% battery, then dropped to around 70 kW for the middle portion. Charging from 9% to 59% took about 26 minutes. It's middle-of-the-pack charging speed for this segment.

Comfort and Noise

Wind noise creeps in around 90 km/h along the upper edge of the front windows, despite the acoustic glass. From the rear seats, there's some low-frequency road noise over rough surfaces, but it's manageable. The Dirac 12-speaker audio system is decent but not outstanding. Mids are clean, but the highs lack crispness and the bass feels flat rather than punchy. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Also, the rear cup holders are shallow enough that tall bottles could topple during hard braking.

Final Verdict

The BYD Sealion 7 is a comfortable, spacious, well-equipped family hauler wearing a sporty costume. If you want a roomy EV for daily commuting and weekend road trips with the family, it delivers brilliantly. The interior quality, safety features, and sheer cabin space are hard to beat in this segment.

But if the coupe styling has you expecting sharp, engaging dynamics, temper those expectations. The soft suspension, deep brake pedal, and comfort-biased steering make this a cruiser, not a canyon carver. I'd strongly recommend a test drive before committing, ideally on both smooth highways and bumpy back roads, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Pros

  • Massive interior space for a coupe SUV
  • Premium soft-touch materials throughout the cabin
  • Abundant storage compartments everywhere
  • Multiple key options including NFC card and phone
  • Strong acceleration even with single motor
  • Comfortable ride quality at normal speeds
  • Full safety suite with 9 airbags on all trims
  • 360-degree camera and adaptive cruise included

Cons

  • Brake pedal feels deep and slow to bite hard
  • Body roll is excessive for sporty lane changes
  • Daytime running lights cannot be turned off
  • Software UI has buried menus and minor bugs
  • Screen brightness too high at night and resets
  • No rear wiper
  • DMS driver monitoring resets every startup
  • Sound system bass lacks depth and clarity

Verdict

7.2/10

The Sealion 7 is a fantastic family cruiser disguised as a sporty coupe SUV. If you want comfort and space over sharp handling, this is your car, but thrill-seekers should look elsewhere.
