Aion V 500 Premium — Smaller Battery, Improved Handling, Better Value
AION V 500 Premium!!เปิดราคามอเตอร์โชว์ ไ้ด้หรู แบตฯเล็กลง ช่วงล่างดีขึ้น
I'm genuinely impressed by how BYD trimmed costs without gutting what matters—the safety tech and driving dynamics are intact, and the suspension tuning is noticeably tighter than before. At an estimated 759,000 baht, this hits a sweet spot if you want a spacious EV without the premium price tag.
First Impressions
When I first walked around the Aion V 500, I had to remind myself this was a cost-reduced version. Visually, it's identical to the 602 Luxury—same design language, same proportions, same presence. The real changes hide beneath the surface. The 65.4 kWh battery is 10 kWh smaller than before, which explains the aggressive pricing. What caught me off-guard is that BYD didn't just delete features randomly—they kept everything related to safety and driving dynamics, which tells you something about their priorities.
Interior and Features
Stepping inside, the first thing I noticed is the seats. Gone is the genuine leather; you get synthetic throughout. Honestly, it doesn't feel cheap, but it's a noticeable step down if you've sat in the 602. The good news is the material quality is still solid, and the stitching is clean. BYD clearly builds these cars carefully, even the entry trims.
What's missing: the rear seat massage function, rear climate zones, the refrigerated storage box, and rear tray tables. The AC charging stays at 6.6 kW, DC drops to 150 kW (from 180 kW). Charging a 65 kWh pack to full takes roughly an hour on DC, which is acceptable. The 14.6-inch touchscreen remains, along with wireless charging and full smartphone integration. Honestly, for the money, the tech package is generous.
Driving Experience
This is where I was most pleasantly surprised. The 500's suspension has been retuned compared to earlier V models I've tested. It's noticeably firmer, more composed over bumps, and significantly less wallowy through corners. The steering feels quicker, more connected. Even in comfort mode, which I used most of the time, the car inspires confidence.
Power delivery is smooth. The 200-plus horsepower is more than adequate—I never felt starved for acceleration in daily driving. The regenerative braking has two settings (soft and medium), though I'd have liked a harder mode for city driving where I use it constantly. Wind and road noise are well-controlled, though tire noise came through occasionally—new tires might help here, but I'm not complaining given what you're paying.
Range sits at 500 km NEDC; real-world figures probably land around 470 km per charge based on how I drove. That's enough for most weeks without stress. The real highlight is how composed the whole package feels now.
Verdict
The Aion V 500 is a genuinely solid car that doesn't feel like a cut-down version—it feels like a deliberate, well-edited trim. You lose some niceties but keep the things that matter: safety, driving dynamics, space, and solid build quality. At an estimated 759,000 baht, it's competitive against Japanese alternatives and offers more interior room than most rivals at the price.
BYD's willingness to improve the chassis rather than just delete features shows they understand what makes a car feel quality. Is this a perfect car? No. But for the money, it's a smart, practical choice for anyone who values space, safety tech, and a confidence-inspiring drive over raw range or leather appointments.
Pros
- Suspension tuning is genuinely better—less wallowy, more assured
- Huge cargo space with clever flat-folding seats
- Advanced safety systems and driving aids unchanged from pricier trim
- Interior feels well-assembled despite synthetic leather
- Cabin is genuinely roomy for its class
- Decent acceleration and power delivery for daily driving
Cons
- Battery reduced from 75.2 to 65.4 kWh—real-world range drops to around 470 km
- DC fast charging dropped from 180 to 150 kW
- Genuine leather gone, replaced entirely with synthetic
- Seat massage function removed
- Rear climate control omitted
- No rear tray tables like the higher trim
Verdict
“This is a smart buy if you value space, safety features, and a sorted driving experience over maximum range or luxury frills. The handling improvement alone makes this feel like a more confident car to live with day-to-day.”
